Ponung Dance

This folk dance is typically performed during significant celebratory event or festival with regards to adi tribe. With the luminous cherish worthy dance itself it entails a message beneath its exuberating luminance.

Being primarily trusted crop for sustaining their livelihood this whole event takes place right before the harvest period i.e. during the initial days of September. Significant events that happen so as to incarnate this festival are ponung dance and sacrifice of esos.

Showing their reverence and wishing for the onset of voluminous crops spreading its blessings all across their communities they perform this dance.

This dance is performed during a way which could please and touch its spectators heart within the most benevolent and innocuous way.


Performance of the dance


This dance is performed by circling young girls and ladies. The dancers places their hands over one another shoulders forming a circle, there are some instances though where the dancers holds each others hand.

Peculiarity of the dance is that the sole one man is permitted is performed with a cluster of girls . This lucky man (🤣) is named as Miri. This man standing amidst the circle that he’s surrounded with sings a standard folk song , taking note of which the gorgeous woman standing within the human augmented circle dance.

The Miri also plays a instrument called the Yoksha. it’s shaped within the sort of a sword and is shaken by the Miri as he sings along. Costume within the Dance


In the Ponung folk dance, the ladies dress up in traditional attire. On top, they wear a black shirt or blouse. On rock bottom , a skirt is wrapped round the waist, and it goes down up to the ankles. The skirts usually have broad horizontal stripes matching the blouse.

On the top, these women wear a conical hat cloaked during a cloth that trails behind. To complete the design , the ladies adorn themselves with traditional style jewelry. Long chains attached with small circular sequences are worn round the neck. These are paired with other colorful neckpieces of varied other metals.
